Our History

Original Building 1912The Lone Oak Church of Christ traces its roots to the year of 1912 when Lone Oak was a small, sparsely populated village of approximately 25 homes. The community had no electricity or modern conveniences, and the roads were dirt or thinly graveled. Communications were poor, and travel was principally by horse-drawn vehicles.

In 1912 Professor G. C. Wharton, who had previously taught in the Henderson Tennessee Bible School, came to Lone Oak to open a school. Bible study and worship services were held on Sunday afternoons in the upstairs of the old school building by Professor Wharton and Professor J. W. Brents.

In 1913 a white frame building was erected by eight families on the site of the present Educational Annex. Later, a small classroom addition was built at the rear of the building. The membership of the congregation at that time was 27.

Construction of a new brick building to replace the original frame one was completed in 1955 while Kenneth Edwards was the minister. Since the new building was to be built on the same sight, the frame building was moved onto the parking lot,and services were held there during the construction. The membership was approximately 200 when the new building was completed.

The present auditorium was completed in 1967 when Jim Cannon, who served the congregation for thirty-one years, was the minister. The membership had grown to 400.

In 1968 the 1955 building was extensively remodeled to become the present Educational Annex. The remodeling included making two floors of classrooms from the former auditorium and cropping the roof to make it consistent with the new auditorium.

In 1985 as the congregation continued to grow, the rear center portion of the auditorium was expanded to add approximately 175 seats. The auditorium was extensively remodeled in 1990 with the front wall and pulpit area being rebuilt and addition of new lights and carpeting.

The newest building containing the multipurpose room, which can be instantly converted into as many as five classrooms, was built as a part of the same building program as the remodeling of the auditorium. The second floor of this building remains unfinished at the present, but can be converted into additional classrooms as the need arises.

With present membership at approximately 650, the congregation continues to grow, and the idea of having to replace the back walls of the auditorium with a balcony for more seating becomes a real possibility. The auditorium was built so that about 300 seats could be added by replacing the upstairs classrooms with pews.

The future of the Lone Oak congregation looks bright. We are honored to have you serve the Lord with us.
